Principal's Report

As we near the end of the exam period I wish to acknowledge our young people who have, to all accounts, acquitted themselves admirably.

Remembrance Day

We paused at 11am on Tuesday to remember those who have made the ultimate sacrifice on the battlefield. In pastoral care period the students were shown a presentation outlining the significance of the day that peace fell across Europe in 1918 after the Great War and at 11am we asked all classes to pause. Thank you to those who took this opportunity to stop and reflect upon the high price of war.

Fr Barry Moran

The funeral for Father Moran was held at St Mary’s Parish Church on Tuesday. Those with a long association with St Mary’s / CBC / PCW may remember Fr Moran as the Parish Priest from 2000 to 2016. May he rest in peace.

VCE Exams

As we near the end of the exam period I wish to acknowledge our young people who have, to all accounts, acquitted themselves admirably. Thank you to the staff and Ms Wendy Mair, VCE Coordinator for your work to help ensure our candidates are well prepared for the exams and that they proceed smoothly. Special thanks to Ms Ros Sloane, Chief Exam Supervisor, and the other members of the team who ensure all exams are conducted according to VCAA guidelines.

Graduation Mass and Dinner

We will celebrate the end of secondary schooling at St Mary’s with our graduating class next Thursday. One of the features of St Mary’s is that there are multiple pathways for our young people, but each end at a common destination as the Graduating Class of 2025. Our Mass and Dinner acknowledges the contribution made to the life of the College by our young people as we bid them every success in the next chapter. It is also a great opportunity to thank our families for trusting their young people to our care.

ACC and CGSAV Coaches

As we near the end of our interschool sporting calendar for the year I express my thanks to those staff members who accept coaching roles during the year and to our young people who put their hand up to represent the College. We are one of the smaller players in our associations and are sometimes overwhelmed by the power of our opponents, but we also show great resilience and determination to continue to often perform above expectations. Our coaches play an important role in ensuring that our young people represent the College with pride and in the spirit of the game.

Student Free Day

A reminder that there is a Student Free Day on Friday, 21st November for teachers to complete assessment and reporting duties. Thank you for your ongoing support.

SIMON / PAM Access

Thank you for your patience over the last two weeks while the security systems in SIMON have been analysed for a potential data breach. We are advised that the providers do not believe that a data breach has occurred and the lock out was precautionary. As is good practice, users are required to change their passwords, especially if they are being used across several platforms. Directions on how to update your password was circulated in email correspondence on Wednesday.

Child Safety

The below information is the last in a series of unpacking each of the 11 child safe standards. I hope it has been interesting to read a small snippet of the official statement of legislation on each of the child safe standards in Victoria, alongside commentary about how each standard is implemented at St Mary’s College.

Please see the below details regarding Child Safety Standard 11.

Child Safe Standard 11: Implementation of child safety practices

Child Safe Standard 11 highlights the importance of ensuring that all 11 of the Child Safe Standards are incorporated into the policies, procedures and practices of schools to embed a culture of child safety. The policies and procedures should be informed by stakeholder consultations, accessible to all, championed by leaders, well-understood by those they apply to and implemented effectively.

At St Mary’s College, we work towards the implementation of Standard 11, by:
  • Publishing our Child Safety policies in easily accessible locations such as our public website, and on staff, student and parent portals (SIMON).
  • Student versions of Child Safety policies.
  • Student created Child Safety posters.
  • Regular Child Safety communications in newsletters, staff and parent meetings, and student community meetings.
  • Respectful Relationships Program.
  • Seeking feedback on policies and procedures from the school community.
  • Staff, contractor and volunteer Child Safety training.

Film Noir Photography, Drawing and Pastel Paintings – Year 9 Visual Arts

From bold contrasts to quiet tension, each piece reflects a deep engagement with the genre and a maturity of artistic expression well beyond Year 9.

As a continuation of our Film Noir theme, Year 9 Visual Arts students were asked to take photographs that reflected the conventions and visual style of the Film Noir genre. Working under specific conditions, students conducted photo shoots at night, focusing on characterisation, lighting, and the dramatic use of shadows to create strong contrasts of light and dark.

Each student was encouraged to take full artistic control, directing their own Film Noir photo shoot. The goal was to capture mood, mystery, and atmosphere—key characteristics of this classic cinematic style.

Using their photographs as inspiration, students then produced a series of four initial pen drawings in preparation for their large-scale pastel paintings. Through repeated practice, they developed a deeper connection and understanding of their chosen subject.

Some brave parents even stepped in as models, helping to bring their children’s creative visions to life!

Harvey Krutop’s drawings are strong and confident, capturing the mystique of the Film Noir style through bold tonal contrasts and carefully cropped compositions. His work conveys a pensive mood, with the lit match adding drama and atmosphere. Shadows and strong highlights are effectively used, with the white of the paper enhancing the intensity of the light.

Sophie Hoad’s four portraits are dark and enigmatic, capturing a sense of intrigue in the character’s gaze. Strong shadows and bold contrasts enhance the dramatic atmosphere, perfectly reflecting the Film Noir aesthetic.

Agatha’s Apostolova’s stylised, strongly cross-hatched drawings capture the timeless glamour and mystique of 1940s actresses. She transforms nostalgic portraiture into something bold and modern. The intricate layers of cross-hatching lend the work depth and intensity.

Ethan Clarke’s drawings are more subdued, yet they capture the depth of the genre with remarkable sensitivity. There is a quiet solemnity in his work — a stillness that invites pause and reflection. Each line feels deliberate, unhurried, and carefully executed, revealing a patient hand and a meditative approach to drawing.

The two pastel paintings are beautifully executed, each revealing a distinct emotional resonance. Thanmaya Kurup’s startling portrait captures the startled expression of her subject — the woman’s tightly wound curls cascading downward, with strong highlights lending the image a dramatic starkness and tension.

In contrast, Sonny Hirschfield’s portrait is striking for its directness. His subject meets the viewer’s gaze head-on, the eyes unwavering and full of quiet force. Hirschfield handles the pastel medium with exceptional sensitivity, layering tone and texture to bring life to the features — and those eyes, luminous and arresting, hold the audience in their spell.

ACC Sport

ACC Cricket, Basketball and AFL.

ACC Cricket

Our Intermediate Cricket team comprised a mix of experienced and developing players. Over the season, we recorded one win, came very close to defeating St Bernard’s, and were outplayed by the more advanced teams from Parade and Geelong.

Our captain, Mick McMahon, was outstanding with the bat, scoring two fifties, averaging over 65, and maintaining a strike rate of over 100. Mitchell Slattery, Noah Chapple, and Jarvis Russell also provided valuable support with the bat.

With the ball, Ocienne Farquharson led the attack, impressing with her accuracy and consistency. Yin Maverick, Zac Juegan, and James Pearce bowled well at times but will benefit from greater consistency going forward.

A special mention must go to several squad members who didn’t always have the opportunity to bat or bowl but displayed excellent team spirit and sportsmanship throughout the season. Their positive attitude and commitment to the team were greatly appreciated.

We now look forward to the next challenge - Senior Cricket in Term 1 next year.

ACC Basketball

Our senior basketball teams showed great spirit and determination throughout the season, even though they faced tough opponents each week.

The A Team was led by our MVP, Matthew Bautista, who had an outstanding season. Averaging 20 points per game, he was a lone hand at times and often targeted by opposition defenses yet still managed to shine — a true class act. Sam Scharper grew in confidence with every game, especially with his rebounding, while Xavier Beck worked tirelessly on both ends of the court. Noah Deng was a constant threat from the perimeter, knocking down shots when his team needed them most.

The B Team was spearheaded by Jude Fitzgerald, who impressed with his physicality, rebounding, and relentless drives to the basket. His leadership was a highlight of the season. Will Stone and Kabir Singh were also reliable contributors, consistently stepping up to support their team.

ACC AFL

The Junior AFL squad faced a challenging 2025 ACC season. Despite regularly competing against bigger and stronger opponents, the St Mary’s boys showed tremendous resilience and unwavering school spirit.

The midfield group - Sacco (Captain), Consentino, Pearce, Roach, Lehocz, and Davis - consistently attacked the ball with intent and applied relentless pressure throughout the season.

In defence, Holland excelled at full back, repeatedly repelling opposition attacks and using his elite kicking skills to great effect. He was ably supported by Ridley, whose courage stood out on many occasions.

Up forward, Potts, Clarke, Muir, and Slattery proved to be dangerous and opportunistic, constantly threatening to score.

Special mention goes to Akacich, Cleland, Komatsuzaki,Caguioa and Brennan, who all demonstrated significant growth and development over the course of the season.

A shout out to all the boys who helped with game day duties and to all parents who came to egg the team on.

Finally, a big thank you to coach Mr. Spencer Harper and team runner Mr Harry Lockwood who were always positive, no matter the situation. There encouragement and upbeat attitude kept the team motivated and believing in themselves, even during tough times. Truly fantastic role models.

St Mary’s will continue to use these experiences to fuel a bigger push next season.

The senior AFL season began with enormous hope, promises and early success but unfortunately faded out towards the end. It was an achievement in itself to field a team this year, especially after last season when St Mary’s was forced to forfeit due to a lack of numbers. There was a genuine sense of excitement and anticipation as we approached round one.

We started strongly, securing two impressive wins against Salesian and Emmanuel. However, over the following four weeks, things became challenging. We struggled to get sufficient numbers on the field, largely due to injuries but also a disappointing lack of school spirit. Against the stronger schools, we often had to compete with only 16 players, highlighting issues with commitment.

I would like to highlight the outstanding seasons of Stone, Scothern, Charlesworth, and Corke. Their never-say-die attitude and competitive spirit are qualities that truly embody the values of our school.

I also want to commend Bennett, Fraser, Long, Beck, Dooley, Korifiatis, and Andrews for their unwavering commitment each week. Over the course of a challenging season, they demonstrated remarkable growth and development.

Special mentions go to the Daley twins from Year 10, along with Basu, Silva, and Hope, who generously stepped up to help make up the numbers when needed.

A massive thank you as well to our dedicated support crew — the senior girls Phyland, Grosso, Pantazis, and Yonas Weldemichael — for performing vital game day duties. Your school spirit has not gone unnoticed and is greatly appreciated.

Finally, I understand that several of our Year 11 boys were deeply disappointed with the way the season ended. I have every confidence that they will use this as motivation to ensure a stronger and more successful campaign next year.

Digital Technologies

Opportunities like this not only ignite curiosity, but also help students see themselves as the innovators and problem-solvers of tomorrow.

During Digital Technologies classes, it is important to give students opportunities to experience how technology extends beyond the classroom. This week, the Year 10 Digital Technologies class were fortunate to have Mindflight 7 come to class to showcase how VR technology is used as an innovative solution in a variety of industries.

Students were able to experience firsthand how VR technology can be used to enhance the learning and training in different industries; from healthcare to construction to design and entertainment. Students experienced flying planes and conducting heart surgery. They were also challenged to work in groups and think like entrepreneurs to come up with innovative ideas that they can utilise the VR technologies to solve real world problems.

It was great seeing the students so engaged and excited in the session. Our hope is that experiences like these help students understand that technology innovations are constantly evolving. Who knows, they might be part of creating such innovative solutions of tomorrow.

Here are some reflections from the students who participated:

“It was cool being able to explore different environments and try things you normally couldn’t do in real life. It made learning feel way more engaging” Joss

“Mindflight was a fun VR incursion we had in Digital Technologies, we learnt how to use VR headsets in an interactive and enjoyable way.” Joaquin

“I enjoyed being able to play virtual drums and perform surgery” Will

“I enjoyed the VR and hands on activities that we could do, it was good because it was very unrestricted and had a lot of enjoyable games inside the vr headsets. It was good also because it was quick and didn't drag on for too long” Nate

“I enjoyed playing the Beat Saber-style drumming game and trying the VR flight simulation. They were fun, interactive, and showed how VR can make learning exciting.” Jake

“I really enjoyed how realistic and fun the VR experience was. It felt like I was inside different worlds and jobs, which made its way more interesting than just sitting in class. It was cool learning about how VR is used in real-life.” Josiah

Amber Hemmes Presents Research at the AToM State Conference

Amber Hemmes proudly represented St Mary’s at the Australian Teachers of Media (AToM) State Conference.

On the 31st October, Amber Hemmes had the privilege of presenting her research at the Australian Teachers of Media (AToM) State Conference, hosted at ACMI (Australian Centre of the Moving Image).

She is currently working on her master’s thesis in Communications and Media Studies, exploring how neurodivergent women and non-binary individuals engage with social media.

Amber’s presentation was highly engaging, as evidenced by the number of attendees who approached her afterward for further discussion. The AToM Conference provided an excellent platform to share her insights with fellow educators and academics, emphasizing the importance of equipping young people with strong media literacy skills.

Well Done, Amber.
