Last week, we gathered as a school community to celebrate our Semester One achievements. The theme for the assembly was Brilliance – Inspiring One Another, reflecting the understanding that brilliance is more than academic success or personal achievement. It is the courage to use our unique gifts and talents in the service of others and to make a positive difference in our community.
The assembly showcased the amazing talents of our music and drama students, recognised students receiving commendation badges, celebrated sporting achievements, and highlighted a host of other moments worthy of recognition. I leave you with the words of College School Captain, Stella Ligudzinski, who offered a personal reflection on the theme and her experience at St Mary’s College.
“As I come to the end of my Year 12 journey, I've realised just how much brilliance I've been surrounded by. Over the years, I've seen countless acts of kindness, resilience and encouragement that often go unnoticed, yet leave a lasting mark. I've seen students celebrate each other's achievements as if they were their own, encourage friends through difficult times, and quietly support one another. I've seen our Year 7 students welcomed into the school with patience, kindness and care, helping them find their place and reminding them that they belong from the very beginning.
I've also come to appreciate our staff more than ever. Throughout my time at school, and especially this year, I have seen teachers give so much of themselves to support every student. When we encourage a friend who's doubting themselves, celebrate someone else's success, or help a classmate who needs support, we're not losing anything - we're simply passing our light on. And before long, one small flame becomes many.
I'd like to leave you with this thought: years from now, people probably won't remember every test score, every trophy, or every award. But they will remember the people who believed in them, encouraged them, and helped them see what they were capable of.
Because true brilliance isn't measured by how brightly one candle burns. It's measured by how many others it helps to light.”
