“Aspire not to have more, but to be more.” – Saint Oscar Romero
Ash Wednesday marks the beginning of the Church’s season of Lent, a forty day period, a very significant and Holy time for our faith community. At our College on this day we would have the Ashes marked on our forehead which is a public expression of our faith and the need to live like Jesus, with compassion, understanding and inclusion. Traditionally we would meet as a school for a prayer liturgy, but with lockdown this year it has meant a more personal reflection of the significance of Lent.
During Lent we support Caritas Australia’s annual Lenten fundraising and awareness-raising appeal each year. The theme this year is Be More. Our challenge to ‘Be More’ takes us beyond ourselves. We are encouraged to make simple lifestyle changes and act for social and environmental justice, so that we may ‘Be More’ in our own lives and in the lives of others so that we can play our part in God’s hope for a world that is fair, just and peaceful.
This year students are encouraged to Be More by supporting the fundraising activities on campus, be an advocate for an environmental issue or share their talents with those in their families and communities. An example of this could be to tutor a younger sibling with a subject they are having trouble with, shift the bins for an elderly neighbour, or do the dishes.
